Dodgeball Debate Part 2

by Peter La Fleur on June 9, 2011

Part 2 clip from HBO's Real Sports program. Basically, stupid parents are trying to take all failure and disappointment out of childhood, inevitably leading to a harsh wake up call in the future when they find out that everything is no longer sunshine, pretty colors, and...air hugs. This video caused me to lose any faith in humanity I once had.

this is the desocialization of a new generation. Shame on you all.

No wonder these kids have issues :(

Sinnerswing July 23, 2010 at 9:38 pm

These parents pushing for this must be wimpy liberals!

Kratos8462 July 23, 2010 at 10:09 pm

New P.E. can suck a hot cock
Bring back the old P.E. it makes kids a helluva lot less softer

CrazyCheeseMagee July 23, 2010 at 10:10 pm

No touching rule? Well, I guess that if a student needs CPR, a dead student is better than a lawsuit.

CrazyCheeseMagee July 23, 2010 at 10:57 pm

@blehhh13 Or maybe the school got sued by some sue-crazy helicopter parents. That could be a reason for implementing these rules.

When they talk about the new PE being “nurturing” and “pro-social” they seem to be implying that competition is not nurturing or pro-social. Unless it’s some 12-year-old screaming racial epithets in a person’s ear on XBox Live or something like that (which could be remedied by simply turning the headset off) the whole point of games is to be social. There might be some trash-talking, but that’s all in good fun and not something to get all up in arms about.

@casenheart I actually saw an informercial of jumprope without the rope. People will actually BUY something that is the equivalent to jumping up and down repeatedly.

casenheart July 24, 2010 at 1:11 am

Basically, all the adults in this piece – save the journalist maybe – are completely insane and shouldn’t be allowed to burden kids with their “grown-up” neuroses: The woman wants to live in a bodily-contact free society, one guy advocates the *novel* idea of skipping with an invisible rope, and the other guy likes to pelt small children with bouncy balls :s

Lumpiia July 24, 2010 at 1:34 am

How does this concept help AT ALL! Its making kids fragile and weak, the kids will end up being wusses and failures. Think about it, there will always be winners and losers in life, they will be hurt emotionally and physically once in a while and they need these experiences. The more they get used to such things the more hurt they will be when they fail.

And seriously no touch policy? When has a hand shake, hug, or pat on the back ever hurt anybody? Never? I thought so.

SHADOW TAG!!!!! WOW LOL

BloggerMusicMan July 24, 2010 at 2:33 am

I was in a Catholic elementary school. It’s definitely no better.

BloggerMusicMan July 24, 2010 at 3:11 am

Dodgeball and tag? I wish they’d allow snowball fights in school.

That PC school with shadow tag and no touch seems like a horrific place with no sense of reality. I loved dodgeball as a kid, and I wasn’t even good at it. I was always amoung the first half of the group to get out.

born2run76 July 24, 2010 at 3:24 am

cranedave July 24, 2010 at 3:57 am

blehhh13 July 24, 2010 at 4:32 am

blehhh13 July 24, 2010 at 4:41 am

seriously, i wonder if that woman had something really bad happen to her as a child.
some kind of abuse.
maybe her parents sucked, never huged her, and these kids are paying for it. lovely.
wait till these kids are in middle/highschool they are gonna have a whole set of their own problems, she better hope they dont know where she lives

ThoseSpoofers July 24, 2010 at 5:03 am

Um hello!!! we need SOME failure in our lives! otherwise failure in the future will be soooo much worse! id rather face loss in a game of dodgeball when im 5, & b humiliated than humiliating myself when im like 19 by throwing a fit if i got laid off or something

teaminergi July 24, 2010 at 5:27 am

Wow, these people are crazy! Jumping rope with no rope, that doesn’t help to create eye, hand and foot coordination! No touching, how about she has a school with no kids and pretend to teach a lesson that is not really there! Or maybe if the kids just came to school in a bubble! Wow!

niemij July 24, 2010 at 5:55 am

BALLOON TOSSING?!?!?!? I just threw up a little

karynnatzke July 24, 2010 at 6:35 am

This is a great segment and a great topic. I believe one must fail to grow and succeed. Matt is right and these people that want to ban dodge ball need to get a clue. America? We MUST get tough or the country will become second rate. This school teacher in Acacia AZ that plays shadow tag with her students should be fired. We are too soft.

Kratos8462 July 24, 2010 at 7:14 am

i couldn’t even imagine 4th-6th grade without Dodgeball and Keep Away

ssgd1960 July 24, 2010 at 7:18 am

Neil is reflecting his experiences as a child. Somewhere in Neil’s childhood he had a “traumatic” experience as a child. Now that he is highly educated he is now going to make the world right in accordance to Neil’s thoughts, beliefs and feelings. Psychology works both ways Neil!

cwassant19 July 24, 2010 at 7:51 am

to neil f. (probably stands for failure) williams: there are things in life called losers, and ur one of the biggest!!!!!!!!! fxck u!!!!!!!!!!!

kbi35 July 24, 2010 at 8:02 am

Being competitive isn’t fair. There can only be one winner. Losing a game of musical chairs will damage the fragile self esteem of the children. Only the strong will survive mentality.. Dodge ball. Yes, we hit the worst players. Not to be mean, because they were easy targets. When I got tagged, it made me try harder and to become a better player. Animals hunt the old and the weak. Easy prey. Without failure, there is no success.

kbi35 July 24, 2010 at 8:57 am

Why don’t the pro’s adpot this. I scored a TD, air five me. Imagine boxers jumping ‘rope’ with no rope. Jumping rope strengthens your cordination. Failing is a part of life.. Whats next.. Riding a imaginary bike?
